Empowering Learners: USING ASSESSMENTS TO DRIVE Engagement and Reflection

Guest Speaker: Donna Clementi
Dr. Clementi, is a national consultant specializing in best practices in world international educators language curriculum, instruction, and assessment. She is ACTFL consultant curriculum design, instruction, and assessment. In 2013, she co-authored The Keys to Planning for Learning: Effective Curriculum, Unit, and Lesson Design, an ACTFL publication that saw its second edition in 2017. She taught French and was the World Languages Program Leader in the Appleton Area School District for 33 years.
She also spent 38 summers working at Concordia Language Villages at the French Language Village and leading professional development seminars for world language instructors. In that capacity, Clementi taught a graduate course in World Language Methods for teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian. She continues to lead ongoing professional development for teachers of Arabic, a collaborative program between the Qatar Foundation International and Concordia Language Villages. She also teaches a summer institute at CARLA University of Minnesota on Assessing Language Learners’ Communicative Skills.

In this workshop, we'll explore project-based learning and examine methods for empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey, fostering genuine interest and relevance in topics learned. We will look into examples of how to lead language learners into tackling real-world issues, promoting critical thinking and effective communication within collaborative environments. Through creative use of the target language, students actively construct meaningful products that address authentic challenges and engage with real-life problems.

bUILDING rEAL GLOBAL COMPETENCIES WITH THE HELP OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENE

In this workshop, we'll learn how AI can support you in the design of units, lessons, activities and assessments that build and demonstrate Global Competencies. During this program we will review key understandings around what AI is, what it does well, and the challenges AI might present. That foundation will support us as we review how to intentionally select and leverage AI tools for the various components of the teaching and learning cycle. We will also touch on tools students can use safely and other ways to support students to develop the new skills they will need in an AI-integrated world.
