Southern California Arabic Language Teacher Council (SCALTC) invites you to our fifth Annual State Wide Conference!

All Arabic teachers K-16 and interested educators are invited to a day full of learning to enhance teaching of Arabic to all learners. 

Nationally Renowned Guest Speakers:

Building Proficiency with Deep and Rich Language Learning Activities
Presented by: Dr. Helena Curtain

This workshop will focus on how can we plan for learning activities that build usable proficiency and engage learners in deep and rich meaningful tasks. The presentation will also share ideas about the following: Are learner tasks intrinsically interesting?  Cognitively engaging? Culturally connected? Communicatively purposeful? 

Bio: Helena Curtain, Ph. D. is an internationally known expert on second language teaching methodology, curriculum development, and bilingual education who has worked as a language educator at all levels. She is the co-author of Languages and Learners:  Making the Match which has been translated into Chinese.  She has received several national and regional awards and has authored numerous articles dealing with second language instruction. She served as Foreign Language Curriculum Specialist for the Milwaukee Public Schools for many years and in that capacity coordinated and supervised K-12 foreign language, immersion and ESOL programs. She served as associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and directed the Foreign Language and ESOL teacher preparation programs. She has broad experience working with schools and school districts, teaching and conducting workshops throughout the United States and internationally in thirty-nine countries.

PARALLEL WORKSHOPS

Workshop 2: Sustaining Motivation & Engagement: Task-Based Lesson Design
Presented by: Mrs. Lina Kholaki     

Bio: Lina Kholaki has master degree in human development, adult teaching in California. She is certified as an ACTFL-OPI and WPT tester. Lina has been in the teaching field for the past 20+ years. She has experience teaching Arabic from K-16 college level. She began teaching Arabic at New Horizon Elementary-Middle School in Pasadena, where she remained on staff for thirteen years. In addition to teaching responsibilities she Created and organized an annual Arabic camp (Ya Marhaba) during winter breaks and after-school “Arabic Club.”In addition to directing AldeenStartalk summer Intensive Arabic Programs for high school students. Since 2001, Lina has been appointed by the Bureau of Islamic and Arabic Education and Aldeen foundation as language consultant and coordinator for Arabic teachers at the four New Horizon since 2001-present. Then moved to teaching college level at Cal State San Bernardino 2006-2011, then she was appointed by University of Southern California as department coordinator and Arabic instructor 2011-2015. Currently she serves as consultant and instructional coach for LAUSD-Dual Immersion program at Elizabeth Learning Center in Los Angeles, California. Lina is the co-developer of “Hayya Natakalam Maan”, a landmark program for teaching Arabic language following the modern standards for young learners. Lina serves as president of National Arabic Teacher Association (NATA K-12) a nonprofit organization that Created as a forum for K-12 Arabic language teachers in public and private sector. Co-chair Southern California QFI Teacher Council “SCALTC”, serving Arabic language teachers in Southern California since 2013-present. 2015 ACTFL Veteran Teacher of the Year Award- San Diego, California.

Workshop 3: Designing Meaningful Cognitively Engaging Lesson Plan
Presented by: Mrs. Iman AK Hashem

Bio: Iman Hashem, M.A. is Program Director of Arabic Language at the Occidental College Foreign Language Project. She regularly designs and conducts workshops, nationwide, for teachers of foreign and heritage languages, most often for teachers of the Arabic and Chinese languages. During her career, she authored curricula and materials for heritage and non-heritage learners, taught and directed K-12 Arabic language programs, participated in the delivery of the Advanced Development of Language Proficiency Program at the Language Acquisition Resource Center, and designed a certificate program for teachers of Arabic and Arabic speakers at California State University, Fullerton. Mrs. Hashem was a member of the writing committee for the Standards for Learning Arabic and for California's World Language Content Standards. Currently, she consults for the Los Angeles Unified School District and K-12 Islamic schools, where she designs Arabic language programs and supports program improvement in language and culture.  She was also the Arabic consultant/coach for the Arabic Immersion Magnet School, and P.S./I.S. 30 Mary White Ovington and the Arabic Immersion Magnet School (AIMS) in Houston, Texas. Also, Mrs. Hashem was the consultant of Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) FLAP Arabic dual immersion and FLES program and Granada Hills Charter High School, and Bell High School.  Mrs. Hashem works at California State University, Long Beach where she taught world language methods and Arabic.  She designed courses in elementary, intermediate and advanced Arabic for non-native and heritage speakers. Iman Hashem was the recipient of the Special Achievement Award from the New Horizon System in 1996, CLTA's President's Award for Leadership in Language Education in 2003, (CLTA) and (CWLP) Outstanding Teacher Award 2012, the John and Phyllis Jung Endowed Part-Time Faculty Award 2014, and the (ACTFL) Veteran Teacher Award 2016.
